Go ahead and read that article if you haven't already. It's been all over facebook. If you're a woman and you're not infuriated by this, you should be. If you're a man and you're not concerned about this, you'd better start to be.
The War Against Women tends to get old after a while with so many people talking about it. But the fact remains that it's a prominent issue and, as much exposure as it's getting, not enough is being done to protect the rights of American women.
The two things in relation to the article that bug me the most are the fund cuts for Planned Parenthood and the reduced protection for women in abusive situations.
I don't understand the concept behind "Well, if you don't have access to education, birth control, or safe sexual examinations, you won't have sex!" How does that make any sense? The less educated people are, the more likely it is that they will contract and STI. And if there are no clinics available to help those concerned with their sexual health get tested, the more likely it is that those who do have an STI will spread it to other partners. The less access to birth control and the education of the different male/female contraceptives, the more unwanted/unplanned pregnancies will occur, and possibly the more abortions will occur. When has being less educated and being stripped of sexual protection ever done a society good?
And with the violence. Let's be real. People abuse people. It's not just adult, straight men on adult, straight women or adult, straight women on adult, straight men. That's why it's so important for our government to recognize people of all sexualities, ethnicities, and standings and protect them. How else are the survivors of abuse and sexual assault going to find solace for what they've been through? How else are the survivors going to get away from their attackers and abusers? For instance, sexual abuse is incredibly common on university campus grounds. The university can only do so much for the victim, especially if a trial through the school goes through and doesn't find the assaulter guilty. A student should be able to have the security and justice in their country if they cannot obtain it from their school officials. And on another note, homosexual domestic violence is widely unrecognized because society don't seem to understand that abuse is not some strange sexual fantasy that every homosexual engages in. The government should at least protect these individuals, regardless if it's embraced their sexual preferences or not.
It's very, very frustrating.
